Draft Day, Compost Class, and Nicholas to the Rescue...!
Wednesday we had our Family Fantasy Football Draft, and as the lone participants not in Phoenix, we went out for wings beforehand at The Alibi. We also had Joe (who won the National Cocktail Championship on Sunday) make us craft cocktails, simply telling him the flavors we liked. All three rounds/six drinks were BANGERS. The man is an elixir magician! Oh, and the wings were phenomenal, too!
The drinks were so enjoyable, I forgot my fabric around-town bag at my table! I messaged Joe and he put it behind the bar for me to pick up on Thursday.
Our Draft was full of trash-talking and underhandedness, as usual - our family takes Fantasy Football SERIOUSLY. My first rounds I made excellent choices, but at the halfway point I went off the rails a bit as most synopses of players read like, "not worth drafting". So I rolled the dice on some rookies...and ended up with the worst draft grade in our league of 12.
I'm, "Here Kittle Kittle" - I once again drafted George Kittle
It's a $40 buy-in, and I expect to finish in the middle of the pack like I always do. It's more like a donation to the six players that are under 25.
Thursday I had several stops in town.
First I went to Digi, which is a local telecomm company. They offer a bundle that is internet faster than what we maxed ours out to (the signal drops about once a day, which infuriates Nathan, who works from home), 140 channels of cable TV, and a cell phone package for $70U.S! We currently pay $105 without cell service and for 20Mbps slower service. When the attendant asked where we lived and I told her, she looked angsty. She said they would not service our community, with an air of, "you guys pissed us off before, we're not coming back". Dammit! I can still get a SIM card for my cell so I can have a local number, but I'll have to go back with my passport to do so.
After Digi, I dropped off plastic bottles in Central Park for recycling, stopped by our bank to see if our debit cards were in yet (they were not...13 days after ordering) and I picked up my bag from The Alibi. Town Council was running the Belizean flag banners across Front Street, after doing Middle Street on Tuesday - here's a quick video - San Pedro Belize Prepares for Independence Day
At 3:30, I had my composting class hosted by the San Pedro Town Council and Recycle Organics. It was incredibly inspiring to do better - even small steps can make a big difference in helping climate change! Our home is one of 60 in a pilot program on the island, and our local advisor will check in monthly to see how we are doing. The local paper was there, and you'll see me in 4 of 11 photos in the write-up - probably because I was grinning like a fool to get something for free, while living on an island, and making good dirt!
Recycle Organics is hosting these pilot programs around the globe in countries like Fiji, Guyana, Costa Rica, and more! You can read the full Ambergris Today article in that link for more details.
I also met a lovely couple, John and Sarita, who have a gorgeous spread of land about 1.5 miles north of ours - it looks like a classic white farmhouse WITH LAWN and gardens! We have admired it many times. We swapped info and the whole pilot program class will have a WhatsApp group to share challenges and solutions.
Friday, John's recommendation for our electrical worries, Nick, showed up promptly at 9! I love him already. He was here for about 2 hours trying to make heads or tails of our electrical mess. We do have power to our septic pump, but the only way to find out if it's working is to dig it up. Fantastic. He made sure everything is safe for us and will be back on Monday to put a bow on some minor things he didn't have the parts for. He got his GC license and is building a few stunning homes! Interesting...
Tomorrow we are going to drive out to Secret Beach and drop off some tools for the guys cutting back the overgrowth, and relax...it's been a long week!
Enjoy your weekend!
